FPMT Foundation Service Seminar

The Foundation Service Seminar (FSS) explores how to best offer our skills and qualities in service. We investigate the purpose and mission of FPMT, what it means to be an FPMT center, and how that vision translates into action for centers, projects, and individuals.

We explore our relationship to resources – both material and human; communication skills and conflict resolution; teaching according to the level of the student; ways to maintain and develop our personal practice in the midst of service, and methods to prevent and cure burnout. We discuss service in terms of Guru devotion, karma, compassion, and emptiness, and how to draw strength, inspiration, wisdom, and guidance from these practices.

We use the Inner Job Description, a tool for developing what Lama Zopa Rinpoche calls the “inner professional” (read a teaching on the inner professional), and integrate the Dharma into our daily lives. The training includes group discussion and sharing of experiences, and includes daily meditations as well as group practice as advised by Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

The workshop will be facilitated by François Lecointre, director of Institut Vajra Yogini, and Sarah Brooks, Spiritual Programme Coordinator of Mahamudra Centre.

Who Should Come?

This seminar is fantastic training for anyone offering service in an FPMT centre, project or group, as well as reinvigorating for those who have been already serving for some time. Whether you are the cook or a board/trustee member, this seminar helps connect you with the bigger FPMT family and provides many of the answers about how the organization developed and works together.

Schedule and Travel

Arrivals for the seminar are on Thursday the 13th. We recommend arriving in time for dinner at 6:00pm, and we’ll have a mandatory introductory session at 7:30pm. We are located in a remote part of the countryside, so it’s good to get checked in a settled before dark if possible. The seminar is five full days, running until 4:00pm on the 18th. We’ll help coordinate possible ride shares with people driving to and from Auckland by car, but be aware those details generally can’t be confirmed till close to the date. Depending on your travel arrangements you may want to book an extra night with meals and leave on the 19th (note: the ferry does not run on the 19th, so you will need to book a bus or shuttle for public transport). Options and contact details for transport are on our Getting Here page.

Costs and Registration

To make this training available to anyone who wants to come, we are offering it on a purely donation basis. We hope that this will inspire your generosity at whatever level you can afford to help the centre cover costs.

We’ll be assigning accommodation based on a number of factors, including health issues, sangha and seniority, and timing of applications. We only have a couple of cabins available, so most people will be in single or double/triple rooms with a shared bathroom and shower facility. We will put everyone in the best possible options and let you know closer to the date of the seminar which type of room you were assigned.

To register, please download and read the below form, and return the application by email as indicated on the form before 1 April, 2017.
