A week at Mahamudra Centre is often a cherished and unforgettable experience.

We warmly welcome visitors from across New Zealand and around the world to our peaceful retreat centre, nestled in the hills of the Colville Valley on the Coromandel Peninsula. Surrounded by park-like grounds, the Centre is known for its natural beauty—abundant birdlife, vibrant rainbows, shifting light on the hills, and clear, star-filled skies.

You don’t need to be Buddhist to stay here. Many guests simply come to rest, reflect, or recover from the demands of everyday life. We do, however, ask all guests to come with an open heart and to observe the five lay precepts during their stay—this means doing one’s best to refrain from killing, stealing, lying, sexual misconduct, and the use of intoxicants.

Accommodation is available for short stays, personal retreats, or group retreats. We offer a range of options to suit your needs, including self-contained cabins and comfortable rooms. Camping is also available.

Our Gompa (meditation hall) is always open, with morning guided meditations offered throughout the year. Guests also have access to our Community Building, which includes a lounge, dining area, library, outdoor seating, and a fully equipped vegetarian kitchen (when not in use for catered retreats). The onsite Office and Universal Unity Shop offer books, Buddhist practice items, gifts, and more.
