Originally from the United States, Venerable Yönten developed a childhood interest and teenage passion for Dharma. She became a nun when she was 21 (in 2003), and with the permission of her Abbot received gelongma/bhikshuni ordination in 2011. She did her main study with Khensur Rinpoche Geshe Tashi Tsering from 2002-2009 at Chenrezig Institute in Australia before continuing studies in India and Taiwan until 2011. She then offered service at Chandrakirti Meditation Centre in New Zealand where she completed the exams necessary and became an FPMT In-Depth Registered Teacher. She was then Resident Teacher at Kunsang Yeshe Retreat Centre in the Blue Mountains until 2014.
Currently she is Mahamudra Centre’s teacher in residence leading courses and retreats from September through February, as well as a faculty member of the Human Spirit Program, a Psychoanalytic-Buddhist Training Program in Lod, Israel (a joint project of Israel Association for Self Psychology and the Study of Subjectivity and FPMT’s Lama Tzong Khapa Institute). She is also the IMI representative for Australia and New Zealand. She has a very engaging, lively, and interactive way of teaching and joyfully shares her wealth of knowledge.
For a taste of Ven. Yönten’s teaching and meditation style, here are some recordings online:
A Guided Meditation on Tonglen video (the practice of giving and taking, for those with an understanding of the basic teachings of Buddhism). Note: This starts off blurry, but after a minute they correct the focus.
